The short answer
Why use Square Crop?
Instagram posts, product grids and many profile slots want square images, and cropping by eye always ends a few pixels off. Here the frame cannot leave 1:1, and the output size is a number you type rather than whatever the selection happened to be.
The frame stays square while you drag and resize it. Width takes 16 to 8000 pixels and starts at 1200, and Height is read-only because it always equals the width. Your selection is scaled to that size, so a frame covering only 400 pixels of the original still becomes a 1200 pixel file.
Scaling a small selection up makes it soft. Watch the Crop area readout while you drag: if the width shown there is far below the number you typed, make the frame bigger or type a smaller width. The corners are kept, so the PNG is a full square with no transparent areas.
Square Image does the opposite job: it keeps the whole photo and pads it onto a square background. Crop Image with Square 1:1 gives the same shape but keeps JPEG and WebP files in their own format and does not force a size. Circle Crop makes the corners transparent.

Square Crop tips
- Type 1080 in Width for an Instagram square, the size the app displays.
- If the Crop area width is smaller than your typed Width, the result is being enlarged.
- For product grids, keep the same Width on every photo so the squares line up.
- Need a JPEG? Use Crop Image with Square 1:1, which keeps the original format.
