What the Discord avatar downloader can open
The Discord avatar downloader works with two kinds of links: a server invite (discord.gg/... or discord.com/invite/...) and a direct image link from cdn.discordapp.com. Discord profile pages only open for signed-in users, so we cannot load a person's profile for you. For someone's avatar, the image link is the way in.
An invite page shows the server's icon and, for servers that have one, the invite background (Discord calls it a splash). We return both requested at size=4096, the largest size Discord's image server accepts. Discord does not enlarge images, so the file is never bigger than what the server owner uploaded.
If you already have an avatar link, for example from a bot command, a Discord lookup site or your browser's developer tools, it looks like cdn.discordapp.com/avatars/ followed by two long codes and ends in something like ?size=128. Change that number to 4096 before you paste it, and the file you save is the largest one Discord has.
What this Discord avatar downloader handles
Server icons from invite links
Paste a working invite and the server icon comes back requested at size=4096, the top size Discord serves, instead of the small circle shown in the app.
Invite backgrounds
Servers with an invite splash show it behind the invite card. It is returned with the icon, at the same large size.
Direct avatar links
Paste an avatar or emoji link from cdn.discordapp.com and it is saved as a file. The size number at the end of the link decides how big that file is.
Animated avatars as GIF
Animated avatars and icons have codes that start with a_. Ending the link in .gif gives the animation; .png or .webp gives a still frame.
When to use the Discord avatar downloader

Why the Discord avatar downloader needs no bot or login
Invite pages and Discord's image server are both public. Anyone with the link can open them, so there is nothing to sign in to and no bot to add to your server. The flip side is that anything Discord only shows inside the app, like member profiles and server banners, needs the direct image link.
Once you have the avatar, the Discord PFP maker crops and sizes a new picture for Discord, and the profile picture URL tool finds avatar links on other public pages.
