What the Threads image downloader picks up
The Threads image downloader opens a public Threads link the way a logged-out visitor sees it and lists the image files on the page. A post link returns the photos in that post, every slide of a carousel included, plus any images that appear in the replies and link previews shown under it.
A profile link (threads.com/@name) returns the profile picture and the photos from the posts that load while we scroll. The profile picture comes back at the 320 × 320 px size Threads uses on profile pages, so a profile scan is not the way to get a large avatar.
Threads keeps its images on Meta's Instagram servers, and the image links carry signature parameters that stop working after a while. Save the files you want instead of keeping the URLs. The photos still belong to the people who posted them, so credit them if you share.

Why the Threads image downloader loads the full page
Threads builds each page with JavaScript after it loads, so the raw HTML has almost no image addresses in it. We open the link in a real browser, wait for the post to render, scroll so more posts appear on profiles, and then read the image files the page actually loaded.
