What the Flickr image downloader returns
The Flickr image downloader opens your Flickr link in a real browser, as a logged-out visitor, and lists the image files the page loads. On a single photo page that includes the photo itself at the largest size Flickr sends to the viewer. In our tests a photo page returned the 1600 px file (Flickr's _h size) next to the 1024 px one, plus the tiny thumbnails from the photostream strip under the photo.
Album and photostream pages behave differently. Their grids load 400 px and 640 px previews (the _w and _z sizes), so a photostream scan is good for seeing what an account has and choosing photos. For the large file, paste the photo's own page, the link that ends in the photo's number.
Flickr photos carry licenses from public domain and CC BY through to All Rights Reserved, and the license is shown on each photo page. Check it before you reuse a photo, and credit the photographer when the license asks for it.
How the Flickr image downloader deals with sizes
Size letters in the file name
Flickr marks each size with a suffix: _w is 400 px on the long edge, _z 640, _b 1024, _h 1600, _k 2048 and _o the original. Each result card shows the file name and pixel size, so you can tell which version you are saving.
Big sizes use their own key
The 1600 px and 2048 px files have a different secret in the URL than the small sizes, and the original has another. That is why editing _z to _o in a copied link usually returns an error, and why scanning the photo page works better than guessing URLs.
Owners decide on originals
Flickr lets owners switch off downloads of their photos. When they do, the original is not offered to visitors and the largest file the photo page loads is the most anyone can save, us included.
Photostreams as a picker

Why the Flickr image downloader works from the photo page
Flickr chooses which size to load from the screen size and the page you are on. A grid only needs small previews, so it never asks for the big file. A photo page shows one photo large, so it loads the 1024 px and 1600 px versions, and those are the files we can hand you.
