What the DeviantArt image downloader gets from an artwork page
The DeviantArt image downloader works best on a single artwork page, a link shaped like deviantart.com/artist/art/title-123456789. Instead of listing every avatar, badge and "more like this" thumbnail on that page, it reads the artwork data DeviantArt sends with the page and returns the artwork file.
Which file you get depends on the artist. If they switched on downloads, it is the original they uploaded, the same file DeviantArt's own Download button gives. In a test on a downloadable piece we got the 1206 × 2100 px upload. If downloads are off, you get the largest size DeviantArt shows to visitors, which can be smaller than the upload. Deviations with several images return each one.
Gallery, favourites and profile pages are scanned like any other web page, so they return the thumbnails those grids load. Use them to find the pieces you want, then paste the artwork links.
Artists keep the rights to their work. Saving a piece for personal reference or as a wallpaper is one thing; reposting, printing or selling it needs the artist's permission.

Why the DeviantArt image downloader reads the page data
DeviantArt builds its pages with JavaScript and keeps the details of each artwork, including the image addresses and whether downloads are allowed, in data attached to the page. A plain HTML fetch sees almost none of it. We load the page in a real browser, read that data, and build the right file address from it.
