YouTube thumbnail download, explained
A YouTube thumbnail is the cover image you see before a video plays: in search results, on the home feed and in shared links. This YouTube thumbnail download tool takes a video link and gives you that image in all five sizes YouTube stores, from HD 1280×720 down to a 120×90 icon.
People call this kind of tool a thumbnail grabber, a thumbnail extractor, a thumbnail viewer or a thumbnail saver. They all do the same job. YouTube keeps each thumbnail on its image server (i.ytimg.com) at an address built from the video ID. The tool reads the ID from your link, fetches every size, and hides the ones that don't exist for that video. The JPG you save is YouTube's own file. We don't re-compress it, resize it or watermark it.
There's no app to install and no account to create, and nothing here uses ExtractPics credits, including the AI upscale. To grab pictures from other websites, use the image downloader instead.
What this YouTube thumbnail download tool does
HD thumbnail first
The 1280×720 HD version (YouTube calls it maxresdefault) is at the top. If the uploader never gave YouTube an HD source, that size just doesn't appear, so you can't save a blurry placeholder by mistake.
Link to thumbnail in one paste
Paste a watch link, youtu.be short link, Shorts, Live or embed URL and the thumbnails load right away. Tracking parts like ?si= are ignored. Copy link gives you the direct thumbnail URL.
Free AI upscale
Press Upscale on a thumbnail to enlarge it with AI on our GPU. The HD thumbnail goes to 2560×1440 in a couple of seconds. It's free, with no credits, and you can save it as JPG, PNG or WebP.
Works on phones, no app
Use it in Chrome, Safari or Samsung Internet. In the YouTube app, tap Share, then Copy link, and paste here. You don't need an app or a browser extension.
Who uses YouTube thumbnail download
Mostly creators and the people who work with them, plus anyone who wants a video's cover picture without screenshotting a paused player.

Available thumbnail sizes
YouTube makes up to five thumbnail images for every video. The largest is 1280×720 pixels (16:9), which is also the size YouTube recommends creators upload. SD and HQ are 4:3, so widescreen videos get black bars at the top and bottom of those two.
| Size | File name | Pixels | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD | maxresdefault.jpg | 1280 × 720 | Full HD thumbnail. Missing on some older or low-resolution uploads. |
| SD | sddefault.jpg | 640 × 480 | 4:3 with black bars on widescreen videos. Missing on some videos. |
| HQ | hqdefault.jpg | 480 × 360 | Exists for every public video. 4:3. |
| MQ | mqdefault.jpg | 320 × 180 | 16:9, no bars. Good for small cards. |
| Small | default.jpg | 120 × 90 | Tiny icon size. |
