What the eBay image downloader does with listing photos
The eBay image downloader opens an eBay listing in a real browser and collects its photos. eBay names each photo file by size, s-l64, s-l140, s-l500 and so on, and the gallery strip uses the small ones. Before the results reach you, we swap those names for the largest size eBay keeps for that photo, so the grid shows the full listing photo instead of a 140 px thumbnail.
A listing page also carries pictures that are not part of the listing: similar items, sponsored listings and the seller's other products. In one test an item page returned 37 images for a listing with far fewer photos. Use the size filter, or tick only the listing photos, before you download.
Regional sites such as ebay.co.uk, ebay.de and ebay.com.au work the same way, because they all serve photos from the same image server, i.ebayimg.com.

Why the eBay image downloader rewrites photo sizes
eBay keeps several sizes of every listing photo under the same address and picks one with the s-l part of the file name. Pages load the small sizes first and only fetch a big one when you open the zoom viewer, so a normal page scan would mostly find thumbnails. Rewriting the size gives you the large file without clicking through each photo.
