Random Image online

Random Image generates a picture made of random colored pixels at the width and height you choose. Each run is different. It is useful as a test upload, a noise texture, or a file that will not compress well.

The short answer

Why use Random Image?

When the size has to be exact, drawing a new image beats stretching an old one. Change a value and make it again whenever you need.

Every pixel gets random red, green, and blue values from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, and the image is fully opaque. Width and height can be anything from 16 to 8000 pixels, 1200 × 800 by default, and each run is different.

Random noise has no pattern for a compressor to exploit, so the PNG stays close to the size of the raw pixel data. That makes it a handy test file: you can check how an upload form treats a big image without hunting for one, or convert it to JPEG to see a worst-case file size at a given quality.

Random Pixel runs the same generator and produces the same kind of noise. This page is aimed at test files and placeholders; Random Pixel covers using the noise as a texture.

Random Image tips

  • Noise barely compresses, so even 1200 × 800 makes a PNG of a few megabytes.
  • Set 8000 × 6000 to see how a form copes with a 48-megapixel upload, close to the 50-megapixel cap.
  • Convert the PNG to JPEG to find a worst-case file size at your chosen quality.
  • Every pixel is fully opaque, so this file will not test transparency handling.
