The short answer
Why use Vibrance?
Color fixes are easier to judge one change at a time. The live preview shows blown highlights, muddy shadows, or a color cast before you save.
Vibrance pushes each pixel away from its own gray by an amount that depends on how colorful the pixel already is. A dull pixel gets close to the full boost and a vivid one gets almost none. 50 leaves the photo unchanged, values above 50 add color, and values below 50 take it away.
Saturation multiplies every color by the same factor, so it pushes skin, red clothes, and logos over the top as fast as it lifts a dull sky. Vibrance is the safer slider for portraits and for photos with one bright object in them. Saturation is fine when the whole picture is evenly washed out.
Gray pixels have no color to scale, so Vibrance cannot tint a black-and-white photo or a neutral white wall. Below 50 it mutes the dull areas first, a quick way to calm a busy background while the main subject keeps its color.

Vibrance tips
- Gray and white areas never change, because they have no color to boost.
- Go below 50 to calm a loud background while the main subject keeps its color.
- If the whole frame is evenly washed out, Saturation gives a stronger, even boost.
- Fix a dark photo with Exposure first, since colors read duller in shadow.
