Exposure online

Exposure brightens a photo that came out too dark or tones down one that is too bright. The slider works in camera stops, up to two stops either way, so the change looks like a different camera setting.

The short answer

Why use Exposure?

Color fixes are easier to judge one change at a time. The live preview shows blown highlights, muddy shadows, or a color cast before you save.

The slider is in camera stops. 50 is unchanged, 25 is one stop darker (half the light), 0 is two stops darker, 75 is one stop brighter (twice the light), and 100 is two stops brighter. Every pixel is multiplied by the same factor, like opening the lens or slowing the shutter.

Brightness uses even steps from 0.25 to 1.75 times, so its top end is gentler than two stops of exposure. Gamma keeps black and white where they are and moves only the midtones, which is the better choice when the shadows are dark but the sky is already bright.

Raising exposure cannot bring back a sky that is already pure white, and any highlight pushed to white stays clipped in the download. If bright areas start losing detail, step back and lift the shadows with Gamma instead.

How to use Exposure

  1. 01
Tap Choose image and pick the dark or overexposed photo, or paste it from your clipboard.
  2. 02
Move Amount away from 50. Every 25 points is one stop, so 75 doubles the light and 25 halves it.
  3. 03
Tap Apply changes, then Download result to save the corrected PNG.

Exposure tips

  • Around 62 is half a stop brighter, often enough for a dim indoor shot.
  • Pure white areas stay flat; lowering Exposure turns them gray without bringing back detail.
  • If faces are dark but the sky is fine, Gamma lifts midtones without clipping highlights.
  • Brightness tops out at 1.75 times, while Exposure at 100 multiplies the light by four.

Exposure FAQ

Something missing? Ask us.

How many stops can Exposure change?

Two in each direction. Every 25 points away from 50 is one stop, so 75 doubles the light and 100 quadruples it.

Does Exposure upload my file?

No. Your browser does the work and clears the file when you leave the page. File names, pixels, and metadata are not sent to analytics.

Is Exposure free to use?

Yes. No signup and no watermark.

Why did Exposure fail or look wrong?

If the tab stops responding, the file is too big for this device's memory. iPhone HEIC photos may need exporting as JPEG first.
