Why use Tile Effect?
Repeating a picture by hand means shrinking it and lining up every copy edge to edge. Here you set columns and rows and the preview redraws while you change them.
Columns and Rows each run from 1 to 20 and start at 2, which gives four copies at half size. The canvas stays at your image's own width and height, and the preview updates as you type. At 5 × 5 a 2000-pixel-wide photo holds 25 copies, each 400 pixels wide. The download is a PNG.
Every copy is a smaller version of the original, so detail drops as the grid grows. For sharp copies, enlarge the picture first with Resize Image, for example to four times its width before a 4 × 4 grid. The copies sit edge to edge without any blending, so a photo shows hard lines where one copy meets the next. Icons and logos on a flat background repeat more cleanly.
Image Splitter is the opposite job: it cuts one picture into separate tile files in a ZIP instead of repeating it. To place several different photos in a grid, use Collage Maker, which takes up to 24 images. For a repeating background on a web page, a single small tile set to repeat in CSS is lighter than a big tiled PNG.
