Why use Merge Images?
Putting two screenshots next to each other in a basic editor means resizing each one by hand. Here every image is matched to the same height or width automatically.
Layout starts at Horizontal and Image fit at Show whole image. In that mode every picture is scaled to the height of the shortest one, capped at 1600 pixels, and placed left to right with no gap. Vertical does the same top to bottom, matching widths instead. Very long strips are scaled down to stay under 16000 pixels and 50 megapixels.
Grid works differently. Every cell takes the size of the first image, capped at 1600 pixels per side, and the grid has as many columns as the square root of the image count, rounded up. With Show whole image, pictures of other shapes sit inside their cells with white bars. The background is always white.
Collage Maker uses the same layouts but starts on Grid with Fill (crop to fit), which suits photo sets. Image Overlay stacks two images on top of each other instead of next to each other. To cut one picture into pieces, the opposite job, use Image Splitter.
