The short answer
Why use Image Overlay?
Layering two photos normally means a layer-based editor. Here two picks and one slider give you a double exposure, a texture overlay, or a quick alignment check.
The first image you add is the base and sets the output size. The second goes on top. Overlay opacity runs from 0 to 100% and starts at 55%, so both pictures are clearly visible. At 0% you only see the base, and at 100% the top image hides it completely. Any images after the second are ignored.
The top image is scaled to fill the whole base and centered, keeping its proportions. If the shapes differ, for example a portrait over a landscape, the top image loses its top and bottom. Crop both photos to the same aspect ratio first when exact alignment matters, such as comparing two versions of a design.
Image Blender uses a multiply mix, which suits paper textures and line art. Image Compare puts the two pictures side by side with a divider instead of fading them. Add Logo is for a small picture in the corner, not a full layer, and it keeps the logo's own proportions within 28% of the photo.
Where Image Overlay fits
Double exposures
Fade a forest photo over a portrait for a double exposure look.
Design checks
Lay a new mockup over the old one to spot what moved.
Then and now
Overlay an old street photo on a current one taken from the same spot.

How to use Image Overlay
- 01Tap Choose image and pick the base photo first, then add the picture that goes on top.
- 02Move Overlay opacity from its 55% start: lower shows more of the base, higher shows more of the top image.
- 03Tap Apply changes, check the alignment, then Download result for the layered PNG.
What to expect from Image Overlay
| Check | What it means here |
|---|---|
| Supported input | JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG and browser-supported AVIF images |
| Main controls | Text, color, size, opacity, or layout, depending on the tool |
| Output | A PNG image, or a ZIP when the tool makes several files |
| Working limit | 50 MB and 50 megapixels per image; jobs with several images also depend on memory |
Image Overlay tips
- The output always matches the first image's size.
- The top image is cropped from the center when the shapes differ.
- For textures, try Image Blender, whose multiply mix drops the white.
- Crop both images to the same ratio first for exact alignment.
