Pencil Sketch online

Pencil Sketch turns a photo into gray lines on a white background, like a pencil drawing. The Amount slider makes the strokes thicker and darker, and the download is a PNG.

The short answer

Why use Pencil Sketch?

The usual way to fake a sketch in an editor is to duplicate a layer, invert it, blur it and set a color dodge blend. This tool runs that same recipe at full resolution in one step.

Stroke weight comes from Amount, which spans 0 to 100 and sits at 50 to begin with. The photo is turned gray, a blurred negative copy is made, and the two are combined with a color dodge so only edges stay dark. At the default the blur width is the shorter side divided by 250, about 4 pixels on a 1000 pixel photo. Raising Amount widens the blur and deepens the dark curve.

Low-light phone photos are full of noise, and every speck becomes a pencil dot. Use a well-lit photo, or soften it lightly with Blur first. Very high amounts give heavy, charcoal-like strokes that fill in small details such as eyelashes and fine hair. At the other end, 0 leaves hair-thin, faint lines that can disappear when printed.

Edge Detection gives bright outlines on black and keeps the colors, more like a neon tracing. Emboss gives a gray relief that looks stamped rather than drawn. Cartoon keeps the colors and adds dark outlines. Pencil Sketch is the one that looks drawn on paper and prints well.

Pencil Sketch tips

  • Noisy night photos turn into dotted paper; daylight shots draw cleaner lines.
  • For a coloring page, keep Amount moderate so the shapes stay open for crayons.
  • Print the PNG at full size; shrinking it can make thin lines disappear.
  • Strong backlight leaves a dark outline around people; reshoot facing the light if possible.

Pencil Sketch FAQ

Something missing? Ask us.

Does Pencil Sketch keep any color?

No. The result is always gray. For dark outlines that keep the photo's colors, try Cartoon.

Why do smooth areas turn white?

The dodge blend only darkens pixels near an edge or a change in tone. Smooth skin, sky and plain walls have none, so they stay white like untouched paper.

Does Pencil Sketch upload my file?

No. Your browser does the work and clears the file when you leave the page. File names, pixels, and metadata are not sent to analytics.

Is Pencil Sketch free to use?

Yes. No signup and no watermark.

Why did Pencil Sketch fail or look wrong?

If the tab stops responding, the file is too big for this device's memory. iPhone HEIC photos may need exporting as JPEG first.
