Painting filters in desktop apps often cost money or need a plugin. This one runs a Kuwahara filter in your browser, which flattens texture but keeps the outlines of faces and objects sharp.

Patch size follows Amount, a 0 to 100 slider that opens at 50. The patch radius is 2 plus Amount divided by 12, measured against a 1400 pixel long side, so about 6 pixels at the default and 10 at 100. Each output pixel takes the average color of whichever of its four neighboring squares varies least, which is why edges stay crisp while texture inside them disappears.

On photos smaller than about 700 pixels, the radius stops shrinking with the image, so a small picture looks more smeared than a large one at the same Amount. Distant faces lose their eyes first; frame the subject large before applying it. Big photos take the longest, and the status line shows a percentage while you wait.

Cartoon adds dark outlines and fewer colors, and Posterize gives hard bands of color. Pencil Sketch drops the color entirely. Running Oil Painting first and then Cartoon or Posterize gives cleaner, larger shapes than either filter alone. For a softer, dreamier result instead, try Dreamy Effect.
