Extract from Word documents

Extract from Word pulls every picture out of a DOCX, PPTX or XLSX file and gives you the original files, not screenshots. Drop the document, see each image with its size, then save one or download them all as a ZIP. It works for Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OpenDocument files.

The short answer

Why use Extract from Word?

Copying a picture out of Word or PowerPoint usually gives you a shrunken, recompressed copy, and saving dozens of slides one by one takes ages. These files are ZIP archives that keep each picture untouched, so copying those files out returns the exact image that was inserted, at full resolution.

The file is read in a separate browser worker. Viewers show a flattened page or image; they are not full editors for the original format.

Extract from Word tips

  • Open old .doc or .ppt files in Word or PowerPoint and save them as .docx or .pptx first.
  • Pictures come out in the order the document stores them, which is usually the order they were inserted.
  • EMF and WMF files are vector drawings from Office; they are included as they are, and Inkscape or LibreOffice can open them.
  • Images that were cropped inside Word come out uncropped, because Office keeps the full original.

Extract from Word FAQ

Something missing? Ask us.

Are the images full quality?

Yes. Extract from Word copies each picture file exactly as it is stored inside the document, byte for byte. Nothing is resized or recompressed.

Which files work?

Word (.docx, .docm), PowerPoint (.pptx, .pptm), Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm) and OpenDocument (.odt, .odp, .ods). Older .doc and .ppt files use a different format; save them in the newer format first.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is read in this browser tab and never sent to ExtractPics, so it works for private documents too.

Why are some pictures larger than they looked in the document?

Word and PowerPoint shrink and crop pictures for display but keep the original file. You get that original, so it can be bigger than what you saw on the page.

What should I check before saving with Extract from Word?

Complex files can use fonts, color profiles, or layers the browser cannot draw exactly. Treat the result as a preview unless the tool says otherwise.

Can I use Extract from Word on a phone?

Yes, in Chrome or Safari. Big videos, RAW files, and long PDFs can run out of memory on a phone, so use a computer for those.

Is Extract from Word free to use?

Yes. No signup and no watermark.

Why did Extract from Word fail or look wrong?

Check fonts and layers the viewer cannot fully reproduce. If the tab stops responding, the file is too big for this device's memory.
